Hardcover, Very Good, no DJ, Half-leather, Tan brown calf leather with raised bands and contrasting title labels in red and green on spine, decorative gilt inlay, marbled boards, All page edges marbled, some light wear to leather at edges, no leather loss, hinges fine, bindings tight, prev owners bookplate on front endpaper of bothe volumes, foxing of free pages but title and text pages are not foxed, Vol. I. Frontispiece +xii + 532 pp. + folding map (long tear at spine almost detached). Vol. II. Frontispiece + viii + 563 pp.() This is an EXACT reproduction of a book published before 1923. This IS NOT an OCR'd book with strange characters, introduced typographical errors, and jumbled words. This book may have occasional imperfections such as missing or blurred pages, poor pictures, errant marks, etc. that were either part of the original artifact, or were introduced by the scanning process. DJ : Short for dust jacket, a protective and often decorative wrapper, usually made of paper which wraps around the binding of a book.
Marbled boards : A hardcover book with a decorative, multi-colored paper on the outside covering.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
raised band(s) : On leather bound books, the ridges that protrude slightly from the spine.
tight : Used to mean that the binding of a book has not been overly loosened by frequent use.
gilt : The decorative application of gold or gold coloring to a portion of a book. The edges of the text block, or an inlay in the front cover of the boards, for example.
frontispiece : A portrait or illustration on the page opposing the title page.
calf : Leather binding made from calfskin. Most common form of leather binding.
foxed : A discoloration to paper, brown and yellowish spots.
endpaper : The double leaves bound into a book at the front and rear after printing. One side is glued to the inner portion of the boards (the paste-down) and the other is left loose (free endpaper).
bookplate : A device (often decorative) affixed to the book, usually on the endpapers, which designates ownership (or former ownership).
